The African meaning of Umoja (unity).
Umoja is a Swahili word, taken from the Nguzo Saba (Seven Principles). It is the first principle, meaning a commitment to unity, togetherness, and harmony.
Umoja is the foundation principle on which to build, for without unity, neither the family nor the community can survive or prosper. Through Umoja we can achieve progress and find happiness.
Club Umoja
Club Umoja began life in the heart of the African and Caribbean community in the Slade Rd district of Erdington, Birmingham.
The Birmingham area lies at the heart of the United Kingdom, and is known for its diversity, mixture of culture, and traditions. Club Umoja is happy to be a part of the night life, open palate, and wide range of cuisines available in these communities.
At club Umoja we serve African and Caribbean inspired beef, chicken fish, and traditional dishes, seasoned with the savoury spice rub called suya pepper. The suya spice has been enjoyed throughout the childhood of many West Africans. In addition, our members and guests have the option of their entrees being seasoned with the traditional Jamaican jerk spice seasoning.
Club Umoja is bringing the very best of African and Caribbean music, popular street food, and traditional cuisine to our members and guests in a contemporary way with affordable price, friendly service, and a relaxed casual atmosphere.
African and Caribbean Suya
Suya is a shish kebab like food popular in West Africa, originating from the Hausa people of Northern Cameroon, Nigeria, and Niger. Suya is generally made with skewered beef, fish, chicken. The meat is rubbed-in with tankora, a dry spice mix containing powdered ground nuts, cayenne pepper, ginger, paprika and onion powder, then barbecued. Suya is often served with a further serving of tankora and sliced onions.
In Ghana Suya is also known as Chichinga, and in Sudan a similar type of food is call Agashe. In the Caribbean a jerk season rub is used.
